The playdeck at Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s T Building Lower Roof is used by patients in occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, infusion, and therapeutic recovery. Young children and their families typically used this space to accomplish the therapeutic goals of the patients. The playdeck helps patient transition from a therapeutic environment out into the community and provides a space for parents to learn / re-learn to interact with children in a play setting. The existing structure was reaching its end of useful life. Nationwide Children’s hired Elevar to help on the first phase of the renovation project which was to define the specifics of the program and project scope, produce a comprehensive estimate of construction cost for review and approval of project funding, and to produce renderings to communicate options for the renovation to key stakeholders and leadership.
Once the hospital secured the funding for the project, Elevar was retained to provide design services for the new rooftop playdeck. The new playdeck will provide a playful environment that can be enjoyed through three seasons and well into the evening hours with the addition of lights hanging from the tensile fabric shade structure. The playground equipment will be ADA accessible and have been carefully selected to provide a range of learning and physical exercise capabilities for the myriad personalities of children who will use the equipment over the course of the many years to come.
