Cincinnati Art Museum Conservation Lab

Location: Cincinnati, OH

Year: 2020

Photographer: Elevar Design Group

The Conservation Lab at the Cincinnati Art Museum (CAM) serves as a space that cleans and restores artwork. We were hired by the CAM to upgrade work space, photography space, and storage space.

Completed in December of 2020, the upgrades included renovations to all floor and wall finishes and replacement of existing storage. We designed custom cabinets to accommodate the unique storage needs of the laboratory. Custom shelving was needed to store and display pigments and for storage of various sizes of artwork. We improved the access for storage and movement around the lab by installing a ramp and new steps for moving materials and providing a library-type ladder to allow for storage in the high ceiling areas.

Our team designed new countertops, sinks, water supply, and fume hood. We removed an unused xray booth and photo development room which made for better use of the lab space. Being confined to such a small area, the upgrade of the lab was a challenge. We were limited in space and required creative configuration and collaboration with engineers and vendors.
