Rivers Edge Montessori

Location: Dayton, OH

Year: 2011

Photographer: Elevar

Elevar worked with the OFCC and Dayton Public Schools to design and construct a new Montessori school in downtown Dayton, OH. Located on just four acres, the new buildings are situated along the Little Miami River with a spectacular view toward the city. This premier site was selected to create a state of the art building the highlight the District’s well acclaimed Montessori school. Due to the small site, the building was designed on three-stories and is nestled against the existing levee, providing a protected playground area for the youngest grades and allowing direct access to the levee from the second floor Media Center. Two separate wings – one academic and one specialty – converge to create a lobby of centralized circulation space.

The building’s unique window pattern was informed by the Montessori curriculum, allowing views for students completing work on the floor, seated at their desks and standing. The building is divided into distinct learning communities by age group with each community opening up to an Extended Learning Area. Stained glass windows from the existing Franklin Montessori building were salvaged, restored, and reinstalled in the new building’s lobby. This project also received LEED Gold Certification.
